Typical ranges by pool size
Small 200–400 sq ft$5,000 – $7,000
Medium 400–600 sq ft$7,000 – $8,000
Large 600–800 sq ft$8,000 – $10,000
Extra large 800+ sq ft$10,000+

Not sure of your size? A 16 × 32 ft pool is about 500 sq ft.

Out of warranty? Replacing all your panels usually costs about 20% less than a new system the same size.

15 years of heating a typical pool

Riverside, CA · a typical pool · everything in

Solar $8,779
Heat pump $35,938
Gas heater $41,429

Compared with heating the same pool with gas, solar typically pays for itself within two to four swimming seasons of regular use.

What this assumes

A typical pool heated to 80°F for 2½ swim days a week, May through October — a couple of evenings and a weekend. Priced at SoCalGas $2.08 a therm and SCE 34.4¢ a kWh, in today's dollars. Gas includes the gas line, the heat pump its 240V circuit, and solar the extra pump electricity to reach the roof.

What actually happens: even that costs enough that most people barely run the heater, so the water stays cold and the pool sits unused. That's why we're firm believers in solar.

How the sun heats your pool

The whole system as a model: the pool pump sends cool water up the side of the house to the solar pool panels on the roof, and warm water comes back down to the pool
Your pump sends cool water up to the panels on your roof. The sun warms it, and it flows back into your pool.

Solar pool heating is all we do

  • Family-owned since 1981

A second-generation family business, with thousands of systems installed.

  • Our own crew, every visit

The people who design your system are the people on your roof. Nothing is subcontracted.

  • 12-year panel warranty

Most panels carry a 12-year manufacturer's warranty, and we handle the claim. Our own work carries a full year on parts and labor.

  • Color-matched paint on every pipe

We paint the exposed plumbing to match your house before we leave. From the street, most people never notice the system is there.

Questions people ask

Installs, repairs and warranty work across Riverside, San Bernardino and Orange counties, the High Desert and the Coachella Valley — thousands of systems since 1981.

No. Properly installed panels actually protect the roof surface from UV exposure, and industry-standard mounting prevents any water intrusion.

Tile, composition shingle, and flat roofs all work. The mounting hardware is chosen for your roof type.

East- and west-facing roofs work well with about 20% more panel coverage. We calculate the right configuration for your roof.

California's Solar Rights Act (Civil Code section 714) strongly limits what an HOA can do about solar energy systems, which generally includes solar pool heating: they can apply reasonable placement guidelines, but they can't prohibit the system or impose conditions that significantly raise its cost or reduce its performance. We're glad to help with HOA paperwork.

Almost always, yes. The panels plumb into the pool equipment you already have, plus an automatic control valve — and if anything about your setup won't work, we'll tell you at the design visit, not after.

It needs sun — that's the honest answer. A stretch of overcast days slows the heating down, and solar can't heat the pool on demand overnight the way a gas heater can; that's gas's advantage. Southern California gives you sun through most of the swimming season, which is why solar works so well here.

Panels typically last 12–20 years.

Yes. We repair and maintain solar pool heating systems other companies installed — it's a big part of what we do.
