What changes in a High Desert system
Three things usually change, and we plan for each one from the start.
More panel area
We give a High Desert pool more panel area than the same pool would get on the valley floor.
Mounted and strapped for wind
We anchor the array and strap it down for High Desert wind, so it stays where we put it.
Ground racks when the roof won't do
If your roof is small or faces the wrong way, the array often goes on a rack in the yard instead.
Winter
What happens to the panels when it freezes?
Nothing, if the system drains itself. Its panels only hold water while it's running, and it only runs when it's warm enough to heat. When the pump stops, a vacuum relief valve at the top of the array lets air in, and the water runs back down to the pool.
A system that doesn't drain on its own needs winterizing: we turn it off and drain all the water out before the first freeze, then start it back up in spring.

We don't sell pool covers, but we recommend one, and the High Desert is where it matters most.
The panels put heat into the water by day, and a cover keeps it there overnight, so the pool is warmer when you get in. We'll talk it through when we design your system, before you spend anything.

High Desert questions we get
Yes. We give a High Desert pool extra panel area, and we'll suggest a cover to hold the heat in overnight. With both, you get weeks more swimming at each end of the season.
Not if the system drains itself, or has been winterized. A self-draining system empties back into the pool whenever the pump stops, so nothing is left in the panels on a freezing night. A system that doesn't drain on its own needs to be turned off and drained before winter, and we can do that for you.

We build for it. Every High Desert array we put up is anchored and strapped down for the wind, whether it sits on the roof or on a ground rack.
Often, and on a big High Desert lot the yard can be the better spot. We set the array on a rack where the sun is best and run the plumbing back to the pool equipment. An east- or west-facing roof can still work, with some extra panel area. Our install gallery has several ground racks, and the FAQ page answers more general questions.
