One note: that system is in Riverside County, so its readings look like a valley-floor pool, not a High Desert one. We'd rather say so than let a chart oversell.

Questions we get in this county
Yes. A short season is the reason to add solar, not a reason to skip it. On the valley floor, an unheated pool is swimmable for only about four months, while you look after it all year. Solar adds weeks at both ends of that season, with no fuel to pay for.

Usually, and the two work together rather than competing. Solar carries the ordinary days for nothing, and the gas heater becomes the thing you switch on for a cold snap or a party instead of the thing you budget for. Nothing gets ripped out to do it.
Often, and on a bigger lot it's frequently the better answer. A rack along the fence line, beside the equipment pad, or set into a slope does the same job as a roof array. If the roof is still the right call but faces east or west, that works too — it just needs extra collector area. You'll see several ground mounts in our install gallery.

On the valley floor, an unheated pool is swimmable from about early June to late September. Properly sized solar pool heating stretches that from about mid-April to late October, and with a cover at night, from March into November.
