A solar pool heating system should last fifteen to twenty years — which means the company you hire matters as much as the panels they carry. The good news: you don't need to be an expert to separate a solid contractor from a risky one. You just need to verify five things before you sign anything.
1. Licensing
In California, solar pool heating work requires a C-46 Solar license or a C-10 Electrical license. This isn't a formality. Beyond the legal requirement, most panel manufacturers will only honor their 10- to 12-year panel warranty if the system was installed by a licensed contractor. Hire an unlicensed installer and you may be giving up the single most valuable protection your system comes with — before it's even on the roof.
Verifying a license takes two minutes on the Contractors State License Board website. Ask for the license number and look it up.
2. Insurance — both kinds
A properly insured contractor carries two separate policies, and you want to confirm both:
- General liability covers damage to your property — a dropped tool through a window, a leak caused by an installation error, a panel that comes loose and falls.
- Workers' compensation protects you if a worker is injured on your property. Without it, an injured worker's claim can land on the homeowner.
Ask for a Certificate of Insurance before you put down any deposit. A reputable company will hand it over without blinking. Hesitation is a red flag — treat it as one.
3. Manufacturer authorization
Panel manufacturers authorize specific companies to install their products, and for good reason: an unauthorized installer can void the warranty entirely. 4. Longevity in business
A 12-year panel warranty doesn't help much if the company that installed it disappears in year three. Look for a company with 15 or more years in business. That kind of track record signals stability — they'll still be around to service the system, honor their workmanship, and handle warranty claims a decade from now. Solar pool heating has seen plenty of companies come and go; the ones still standing after 15 years are standing for a reason.
5. Referrals from nearby customers
Online reviews are a start, but nothing beats talking to a real customer in your area. Ask the company for referrals from nearby installations — ideally ones a few years old, so you're hearing about how the system has held up and how the company responded when something needed attention. A confident contractor will have names ready.
